Enlightenment, East and West: Pointers in the Quest for India's Secular Identity

Enlightenment in the western context as "a cultural-intellectual process that emerged in Europe in the eighteenth century and is now spreading to the rest of the world" is contrasted with enlightenment in the eastern meaning, particularly as seen in the experience of the Buddha. "Can critical rationality, the essence of the modern European Enlightenment, and the transcendental or mystical experience of 'religious enlightenment', which seems universal, but is also fundamental to the Indian identity, be conceptually reconciled and related, even dialectically? Such is the drive in the present enquiry" from the author's introduction). With an index.

The Church and Authority: Reflections on the Nature and Life of the Church

Twenty-five papers on the church by the noted Eastern Orthodox theologian. Twelve papers are grouped under The Church and Authority, thirteen under Conciliarity and Unity. "Mar Gregorios also brought an astounding clarity to the Oriental Orthodox position in relation to the Roman Catholic Church, especially in the context of the famous Vienna Dialogue. On the crucial questions of authority, primacy and communion, his Orthodox ecclesiological articulations have deeply and genuinely challenged the Roman Catholic theological assumptions, as well as some falsely Orthodox hierarchical notions, lending an in-depth quality to that dialogue" (from the preface by Dr. K. M. George of the Mar Gregorios Foundation).
